Board of Directors - Director Applicants

(1) Alex Ing (NFPA)

I would like to volunteer my time and experience to helping keep the NEC of SFPE keep running. I normally attend most monthly meetings and can continue to help represent NFPA at the local chapter level.

I am currently a Staff Liaison at NFPA currently responsible for a variety of Industrial and Chemical standards. My undergraduate degree is in Chemical Engineering with a Masters in Fire Protection. I am also Certified Gas Engineer and Professional Engineer in MA for Fire Protection.

(2) Steven Lucier (FM)

I am seeking a position on the SFPE New England Board of Directors because I believe my professional background, leadership experience, and commitment to education and service would allow me to contribute meaningfully to the organization while continuing to grow as a fire protection engineer.

My career spans multiple engineering disciplines and roles, including consulting, design, grant applications, project management, and logistics. I also hold an MBA with a background in Lean Six Sigma, which has strengthened my ability to approach challenges with a structured, strategic mindset. These experiences have prepared me to contribute not only technically, but also organizationally and collaboratively within a board environment.

Community engagement and mentorship are particularly important to me. I currently serve as a lead mentor in a high school engineering mentorship program, where I am responsible for coordinating eight mentors and approximately twenty-five students. In this role, I organize activities, oversee long-term student projects, and help create opportunities for college visits, scholarships, and career exploration. This experience has reinforced the importance of education, outreach, and intentional leadership in strengthening the future of the engineering profession.

Serving on the SFPE New England Board of Directors would allow me to apply these leadership and organizational skills in support of member engagement, professional development, and educational outreach efforts. I am motivated by the opportunity to give back to the profession while helping advance SFPE’s mission throughout the New England region.

Steven Lucier is a Fire Protection Engineer with experience in the certification of fire protection and fire safety products and in advancing professional engagement within the industry. He enjoys collaborating with fellow fire protection professionals as well as supporting individuals who may be new to or less familiar with the field.

Steven is actively involved in community education and serves as a lead mentor in a high school engineering mentorship program, where he coordinates a team of mentors and supports student engagement through structured activities, long-term projects, and exposure to college and scholarship opportunities. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering, an MBA, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering.

With experience in consulting, design, project management, logistics, and process improvement, Steven brings a well-rounded perspective that combines technical knowledge with organizational and leadership skills. He is eager to contribute these strengths to the SFPE New England Board of Directors while continuing his involvement in community education and professional development.

(3) Timothy Hawthorne (FM)

I believe that to further the success of any organization, the membership needs to serve in whatever capacity they can. I enjoy working with diverse teams to meet a common goal.

I first joined the New England Chapter of SFPE in 2002 when I was a fire marshal with the City of Cranston Fire Department. I joined FM (FM Global) in 2010 as a technical trainer, overseeing the field engineering training programs in our corporate offices, and relocated to Utah in 2013 as a resident field engineer. I co-founded the Utah Chapter with Vince Newburg and Scott Adams (both of whom are Fellows with the SFPE) in 2017 serving as the president for four years, and served SFPE International as a member of the Membership and Chapter Committee (CMC) and Chair of the Chapter Relations Subcommittee. During this time, the SFPE was facing a dilemma with international chapters. I am extremely proud of the work our subcommittee accomplished to revamp the chapter model and provide guidance to our international members on how to form chapters in countries with unique legal challenges. We also organized and facilitated the Chapter Leadership Summit, held at the start of each SFPE convention.

In 2021, I relocated back to FM, Boston Operations as an Engineering Specialist working with our clients throughout new England. I am now part of the Chief Engineer's Group and I am responsible for writing and maintaining several FM Data Sheets covering fire protection systems, ovens and dryers, and boilers. I am also serving the SFPE International on the Chapter and Membership Standing Committee and the Qualifications Subcommittee. I look forward to the opportunity to serve the membership of the SFPE New England Chapter.

Those interested in serving as a Committee Member (Annual Seminar, Scholarship, Golf, Fire Department Grants) should send an email to president@sfpe-newengland.org by 6/14/26.
