Andrew Ellison, CFEI and Alfonso Ibarreta, Ph.D., PE, CFEI of Exponent will be presenting on the investigation of explosion incidents, from both a field investigation perspective and from an analytical point of view. Mr. Ellison will provide a brief background of the different types of explosions and how an explosion develops. Mr. Ellison will also describe the field observations and methodologies which can assist an investigator in identifying the cause of the incident. Dr. Ibarreta will then identify some of the analytical tools which can be used to evaluate an explosion either post-incident, or when assessing potentials risks. Dr. Ibarreta will then discuss various methods available to prevent and protect against potential explosion scenarios. Several past explosion incidents will be used as case studies to demonstrate how engineering analysis is used to determine the root cause of an explosion. These case studies will include gas and dust explosions in enclosures, and unconfined vapor cloud explosions.
