The Fire Protection Research Foundation, an affiliate of NFPA, is currently managing multiple on-going research projects in the field of fire protection. This presentation will provide a review of recently completed projects, on-going current projects, and projects that are in the planning stages. Additionally, the operating details of the Foundation will be reviewed to provide an understanding how any individual or organization can become more involved with the Foundation on certain projects, or gain access to the Foundations numerous proceedings and reports. Using Elevators to Evacuate Occupants During Fires and Other Emergencies

The presentation revolves around the potential of decreasing evacuation time of building occupants by using elevators as a means of egress in the evacuation process. The presentation will include discussion of where we are today relative to making that a reality as well as a historical perspective of how we arrived at today’s position. Hazard assessments and the impact on building, elevator, and fire codes will also be discussed.

Carbon Monoxide Protection Requirements in MA – Status and Updates

The presentation will provide an overview of the current MA Fire Prevention Regulations pertaining to Carbon Monoxide Protection, with a focus on language which is subject to interpretation and the discretion of the Owner/AHJ. Will include an overview of existing requirements and proposed changes to NFPA 720. Standalone CO alarms and system-connected detection technology will be presented, and the pros and cons of various technical options will be discussed.

The presentation will cover Integrated Compressed air Foam ( ICAF ) technology, summarizing the low water density requirements, the FM approved design densities and concentrations for hydrocarbons as well as alcohol resistant concentrate for Polar solvents. Other features covered will include physical properties, drain time, burn-back resistance, adherence and buoyancy on fuel.

Some recent developments include FM 4991, the Standard for the Approval of Firestop Contractors, UL Qualified Firestop Contractor Program, Standards for the Inspection of Firestop Systems, and the FCIA Maintenance document.
