Monday, May 5, 2003

Program: Transformer Vault –Fire Risk AssessmentThe results of arisk analysisthataddresses thehazard potentialof power transformer vaults ina high rise building will be presented. Due to the complex nature of power transformer installations and their inherent hazard potential, the risk analysis couples a deterministic evaluation with subjective engineering judgment. The results of the risk analysis are presented from the point of view of the building owner and the authority having jurisdiction.Additionally, the discussion of the results will center around the applicability and suitability of code compliant fire protection systems.

Speakers: Douglas Nadeau, P.E., WilliamPucci, P.E., MichaelWojcik, P.E.

Mr. Nadeau is a fire protection engineer with Schafer Associatesin Albany, NY. Mr.Pucciis a professional engineer in the states of CT & MA, is a member of the CT chapter of SFPE, and is president of Performance Consultants, Inc. in Holland, MA. Mr. Wojcikis a fire protection engineer and project manager with Hughes Associates, Inc. in Marlborough, MA.

Monday, April 7, 2003, Boston Convention Center –Sprinkler Design Challenges

A building with a footprint of 1.6 million square feet and over 500,000 sq.ft of exhibition space presents some unusual fire sprinkler design and installation challenges. Enter the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center on South Boston’s waterfront. This program will provide an overview of the sprinkler design difficulties faced with protecting a large facility with unique construction features and challenging fire hazard potentials.

Speaker:Paul Theriaultis, J.C. Cannistraro, Inc.

Mr.Theriaultis the Design Manager for the Fire Protection Division at J.C.Cannistraro, Inc., a large New England Design/Build Mechanical Contracting firm. Mr.Theriault oversees and administers the progress of fire protection system designs alongwith the education and development of the design technicians. Mr.Theriaultis a fire protection engineer and an active lecturer for NFPA, Northeast University and other industry associations.

Monday, March 3, 2003, ICC Performance Code for Buildings and Facilities

This presentation will provide a brief overview of the 2003 edition of the ICC Performance Code for Buildings and Facilities. This will include a discussion on the structure of the document and how it relates to the current equivalencies process. In addition, a review of current activities related to performance based fire protection engineering and the ICC will be discussed.

Speaker: Beth Tubbs
International Code Council

Beth Tubbs is currently a Senior Staff Engineer with the International Code Council. Since 1996 she has been involved with the development of the ICC Performance Code for Buildings and Facilities for the ICC and also participates in several international activities related to performance based buildings and specifically performance based building regulations. She is the coordinator for CIB TG37, Performance Based Building Regulatory Systems and a member of the Inter-Jurisdictional Regulatory Collaboration Committee. She holds a P.E. from the State of California in Fire Protection Engineering and is a member of SFPE, International Association of Fire Safety Science and NFPA.

Monday, February 3, 2003, World Trade Center Disaster

This presentation will cover the FEMA Building Performance Assessment report completed after the Building Performance Assessment Team’s (BPAT) survey of the scene after the disaster. The program will cover the buildings affected by the attacks, the resulting damage, and the findings of the BPAT report. The program will include a concise overview of the structural and fire damage caused by the attacks and the resulting collapse of the two Towers (Buildings No. 1 & 2) and Building No. 7.

Speaker: Robert F. Duval – Senior Fire Investigator
National Fire Protection Association

Mr. Duval is responsible for conducting investigations of technically significant incidents in order to gather, “lessons learned” from each incident to apply those lessons to improving NFPA codes and standards. The investigation of these incidents includes documenting the emergency services response, the structure(s) involved, as well as the events leading up to and following the incident. Mr. Duval was a member of the FEMA Building Performance and Assessment Team that studied the World Trade Center disaster.

Monday, December 2, 2002 - NFPA 13, Installation of Sprinkler Systems – 2002 Edition Update (DOWNLOAD PRESENTATION)

The recently issued 2002 edition of NFPA 13 has undergone numerous style formatting and technical revisions. Many of the requirements in NFPA 13 have been reorganized into unique chapters. Technical changes in the areas of irregular ceilings, ESFR sprinklers, storage on solid shelves and, residential sprinkler installation have been made. These and other changes
to NFPA 13 will be highlighted and discussed.

Speaker: Christian Dubay
National Fire Protection Association

Chris Dubay is the NFPA staff liaison to the NFPA 13 technical committees and serves as secretary of the NFPA 13 Technical Correlating Committee.

Monday, November 4, 2002 - Beyond Integration….Unified Fire and Security System Technologies

There are threats to life safety, beyond those associated with fire. Managing fire and security concerns has traditionally resulted in some form of system interfaces or “integration.” The integration of separate fire, security, access control and CCTV systems results in a workable solution. However, beyond integration is “unified” fire and security system technologies. The evolution of these technologies, their benefits, and associated applications will be discussed.

Speaker: Mike Browning & Richard Tucker
Edwards System Technology, Inc.

Mike Browning and Richard Tucker have a combined 30 years experience with Edwards System Technology, Inc. (EST) a world leader in innovative life safety solutions for commercial and industrial applications. Richard Tucker has been instrumental in the development of EST’s integrated fire and security system.

Monday, October 7, 2002 - Water Mist Fire Protection Systems

Water mist fire protection systems offer effective fire suppression solutions in marine, computer / telecom, metro / tunnel, and turbine / machinery space applications. Water mist fire protection systems have also been used in office, hotel, and historic buildings. The evolution of high-pressure water mist technology and its fire protection applications will be discussed.

Speaker: Victor Gameiro & Randy Edwards
Marioff, US

Victor Gameiro is President and Randy Edwards is Manager of Distributor Relations for Marioff, US. Marioff is a world leader in fire suppression and smoke minimization solutions using water mist technology.
